Current Trends:

Competition for law firm business and new clients has never been stronger. Firms of all sizes are in a rush to embrace marketing and business development techniques previously viewed as the province of the corporate world. An important and critical strategy for law firm management now includes locating and successfully hiring top professional talent to support their new business and client development initiatives. We have seen a rapid increase in demand for experienced legal professionals in many areas of both IT and Marketing, particularly in Litigation Support, Business and Practice Development, PR and Communications. As a result of this increased demand, law firms have become more creative and open to hiring candidates from outside the legal industry who bring fresh perspectives and often more sophisticated business development techniques to the firm.

Future Trends:

As competition for candidates with the proper mix of credentials, skills and attitude escalates, so have salaries. We have seen an increase of average salaries for legal professionals jump as much as 10% annually for the past 3 years. However, there has been some leveling off recently as salaries have caught up with the market. We expect demand to continue to increase for business development professionals, particularly within key practice areas such as M&A, Corporate/Capital Markets, Private Equity and Litigation. Within IT, there continues to be tremendous need for Litigation Support professionals at all levels.
